Most Needed Winter Donation Items

Most Needed Winter Donation Items

Now that the days are getting shorter, they are also getting cooler. Winter is around the corner and before you know it, there will be frost on the grass and snow in the forecast. Whether you love the colder winter months or just hibernate until spring, winter will be here, and you need to be prepared. This could mean winterizing your home or business, checking your first aid kit ahead of any blizzards, or ensuring you have enough blankets and warm weather clothing in case of any weather-related emergency.

For those dealing with housing insecurity, the impending colder weather is of even more concern. During the harsh winter months, the homeless not only struggle with necessities like food and water, but they also have to find warm clothing to keep themselves protected from freezing temperatures and snowy weather.

According to Endhomelessness.org, in January 2020, “there were 580,466 people experiencing homelessness in America.” No state is immune from the problem and while the majority of homeless are individuals, a significant number (30%) are families with children. This was the last time comprehensive statistics on homelessness in the United States were recorded. Then Covid hit.

Covid has (likely) made homelessness worse.
When news of an impending worldwide pandemic first hit the airwaves, no one knew how bad it would be or how long it would last. But as those first few weeks of shutdowns and closures extended into months, businesses all over the country (and much of the world) began to suffer. From restaurants to specialty shops to travel and tourism businesses, people began losing pay and losing jobs. Unemployment grew exponentially and, in all likelihood, so did homelessness.

There is not yet data to “reflect shifts in homelessness that may have occurred because of steps taken to address COVID or elevated unemployment rates tied to the pandemic or the recession.” Yet, we do know that 2020 saw a rapid increase in evictions in cities all over the U.S. from Phoenix to Houston to Memphis. The United Way writes, “…this surging number of evictions led to a federal order to temporarily halt residential evictions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. However, for many landlords, the order created a financial burden of housing renters with no payments.”

Homelessness this winter continues to be a valid and significant concern for most states. Shelters and nonprofits will be looking for donations and any help businesses and individuals can provide. Here are a few ways you can help your community.

Volunteer at your local food bank or shelter.
We often feel compelled to give money to those in need and while monetary donations are almost always most certainly welcomed, don’t underestimate the value of your time as well. As the holidays approach, many shelters and food banks become inundated with seasonal donations. Help them distribute and sort donations so that everyone who needs, gets.

Or, volunteer to serve meals to those in need. A friendly smile and chat can make those who are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity feel valued and warm. Sometimes it’s more about how we treat people than what we can give. Paying it forward doesn’t have to mean donating “stuff,” it can also come from extending kindness and compassion.

Organize a donation drive.
One of the easiest and most effective ways to help your community is to organize a donation drive for the most needed winter items. Whether you’re a small business, school administrator or helper, or an individual, consider organizing a donation drive.

Call your local shelters or homeless outreach team to see which items are most in need. Otherwise, you can be sure that during frigid winter months, these items will always be welcomed: travel-size toiletries, blankets, winter wear, and socks. DollarDays can help with quality wholesale winter essentials at excellent prices. We’ve also got donating tips and ideas to help you organize your donation drive — like our easy to complete Wishlist.

Because it’s not just adults who experience homelessness, there is also a real need for family items like children’s clothing, and even toys, games, and books to keep sheltered kids occupied. You can also donate baby items to families in need like diapers and wipes, clothes, and shoes.

Make a plan to help throughout the winter months.
Because winter first hits as the holiday season approaches, many businesses and individuals tend to be generous with their donations during this time. However, in many parts of the country, winter drags on for months into the new year. This year, instead of making a one-time holiday donation, make a plan to give a little throughout the entire winter season.

Even as more and more people become vaccinated, masking up in public is not likely to disappear anytime soon. Masks not only help in the current Covid crisis but can also help the spread of the seasonal flu. Consider a once or twice a month donation of masks and other PPE. Donate personal care items on an ongoing basis or make a plan to check in with your local shelters or nonprofits at the start of January, February, and March to see what they need.

Although giving to a shelter is always a good idea, consider other donation centers, as well as many homeless, who don’t go to shelters. According to Nationalhomelessness.org, “few communities have city-wide cold-weather response plans, and many of the plans currently in place leave gaping holes inaccessibility.” You can contact your local authorities or other homeless outreach organizations for help in getting your donations into the hands of those who need them most.

Homelessness is an issue that takes combined effort to help. There is no one easy solution but empathy and awareness can help. There are steps you can take today to help this problem. DollarDays is committed to partnering with communities to make a difference and lend a helping hand.

Shipping transportation

What’s Going on with Container Shipments & How It’s Affecting Your Organization

When Covid brought the world to a standstill in March 2020, everyone knew there would be significant (and almost immediate) consequences for consumers and businesses. Now, more than a year and a half later, we are seeing just how significant the impacts of the pandemic have been.

While many businesses shuttered their doors in those early weeks of Covid restrictions, most commerce moved online. As a result, the logistics of moving incredible amounts of goods across the globe became increasingly stressed. As the Covid pandemic persists, the shipping industry continues to struggle with backlogs and delays.

Why are there still so many delays?
Even though many businesses have been able to reopen their doors with some adjustments, the burden of so much online shopping continues to cripple the shipping industry. A significant number if imports enter the U.S. from Asia on massive container ships. The ports at Los Angeles and Long Beach see the most traffic and since the pandemic, have seen unprecedented numbers of cargo ships.

When the cargo ships enter these busy ports, they must adhere to several time consuming Covid protocols. According to Erik Olson of Popular Science, “officials noted that every shift change for port workers requires new protocols, including the cleaning of crane compartments and equipment, daily health screenings for staff, and other inefficiencies caused by social distancing measures.”

If even one member of a cargo ship’s crew tests positive, it can mean the entire ship must turn around, and get a new crew before being able to unload the ship. This can sometimes means weeks and months of delay costing millions.

Considering that many ports outside the U.S. have similar protocols in place, it’s not difficult to understand why the supply chain continues to suffer. Container shipping delays are creating headaches for nearly all businesses.

How bad is it?
The early days of the pandemic witnessed shortages of paper products like toilet tissue and paper towels, as well as some food supply shortages. Although many of those initial supply chain shortages have been rectified, shipping delays are part of the new normal.

As of September 2021, the wait time to get into the ports of Los Angeles and along Beach was around 8 days — longer than any other time in history. The unprecedented delays only seem to be getting worse.

Compounding the problem of lag time getting into busy ports, is the fact that the number of ships waiting to enter is so long, some have been ordered to simply drift while they wait —an incredibly costly option. The line of ships waiting to unload and dock has been up to 40 miles long. Some ships are drifting into waters too deep to anchor.

Another reason for the dramatic container shipping delays is because the size of cargo ships has increased. Ships can now stretch a width of twenty containers or more. These massive container ships require significantly more manpower to unload and maneuver through ports. This not only means more people to move goods, but also means more people who have to sanitize and meet all the Covid restrictions before, during, and after unloading the massive sips the size of some cities.

How businesses and consumers are adjusting.
Because of the prolonged shipping delays, both businesses and consumers have had to make adjustments. It’s not just inconvenient to have to wait for goods, the delays are also expensive which is not good for anyone. According to a September 2021 article in Business Insider, “shipping prices between the [the U.S. and Asia] have jumped 500% from this time last year.”

One of the ways businesses are adjusting to the delays is by passing off the increased costs to consumers. Many businesses have had to forego one or two day shipping guarantees and have had to charge more for shipping.

Meanwhile, consumers, who’ve grown accustomed to waiting until the last minute to shop, have had to rethink when and how they make their purchases. Many online shopping purchases now require some advanced planning. With the holidays just around the corner, this means consumers should spend some time now thinking about the gift ideas and purchasing logistics.

Prepare now for holiday shopping
Whether you are staying home and hosting or traveling for the holidays, early holiday shopping is a must this year. You should also give ample consideration to who you need to buy gifts for and whether those gifts need to be shipped. Because you’ll likely be incurring some additional shipping costs this year, save where you can.

DollarDays has some incredible wholesale deals on gift ideas like clothing, toys and games, as well as a robust holiday section catered to all your holiday needs. You don’t have to scrimp on gifts the whole family will love with DollarDays’ incredible quality items at incredible prices.

Many industries are encouraging consumers to start shopping now. Steve Pasierb, the president and CEO of The Toy Association said, due to lower than normal inventory, “if there’s a must-have item on your child’s wish list, we are encouraging families to shop early for toys to ensure that you’ll be able to deliver on those coveted gifts.”

Don’t wait until it’s too late. Shop now to stay on top of ever changing delay times and prices.

While many of us have gotten close to returning to pre-Covid activity, there are still some notable changes. Online shopping continues to suggest the economy is growing, shipping delays are still significant. Consider opting for longer delivery times to cut back on fees and remaining patient while you wait. Also remember to shop early so you’re not left scrambling and adding even more undue pressure on this already stressed shipping industry.

How You Can Help with Breast Cancer Awareness

How You Can Help with Breast Cancer Awareness

October fills the imagination with images of orange, crimson, yellow, and…pink! Thanks to the marketing efforts of many breast cancer awareness organizations, pink has become as synonymous with October as other traditional fall colors. Breast cancer awareness month was first recognized in 1985 and has steadily grown into one of the most lucrative and important cancer fundraising efforts.

With 1 in 8 women facing a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, nearly everyone has been touched by breast cancer in some way. Whether it’s your mother, sister, aunt or friend, no one is immune from this widespread disease. While significant efforts have been made to predict women at higher risks of contracting this disease, “about 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer.”

And it’s not just women who are impacted by breast cancer. Breastcancer.org estimates as many as “2,650 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men in 2021.” The need for breast cancer awareness is as necessary today as it was decades ago.

There are plenty of ways to help make a difference from raising money to helping women find screening, you can contribute to the fight against the most common cancer globally. Here are several ways you can help raise awareness and money for breast cancer research.

Get Involved
Whether you are looking to get involved as an individual or as a small business, there are plenty of ways to lend a helping hand.

Support a Breast Cancer Organization
The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. is an excellent resource for all kinds of information on breast cancer. Here you can get answers and help if you, or a loved one, are diagnosed with breast cancer. Here you can also find information about how to get involved in the cause. As an individual, you can make a monetary donation or become a community ambassador and volunteer. If you own a small business, you can partner with NBCF to organize fundraisers or donation drives.

Other popular charities that tirelessly work to bring breast cancer awareness and help to those who need it include: Susan G. Komen Foundation, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, American Cancer Society, and Breastcancer.org.

Each of these organizations will help you make an impact and make a real difference in the fight against breast cancer from helping those currently in treatment, to contributing to ongoing research, to helping organize events, there is plenty of work to be done.

Sponsor a Sporting Event
If you prefer to make an impact closer to home, you can help sponsor a local sporting event. Many youth sports leagues are happy to support a good cause by holding raffles during games, donating a portion of sales from snack shacks, or even outfitting teams with pink socks, ribbons, buttons, or even baseball caps. Buying these items wholesale with DollarDays is a great way to ensure you keep the focus on getting raising money to donate.

For a super simple additional fundraising idea, you could put out a breast cancer donation jar near the ticket counter as patrons enter the stadium, field, or court. Local communities love rallying around a cause and organizing a fundraiser around a sporting event is a great way to bring everyone together for a worthy cause.

Host Your Own Event
If a sporting event is not your style, consider hosting some other type of event. This does not have to be anything too time-consuming or overly complex. You could simply put breast cancer clothing donation bins outside schools or local retailers. Many organizations like Breast Cancer Solutions use clothing donations to help raise funds for research.

The Susan G. Komen Foundation is a great place to start if you’re looking to host an event or DIY your fundraising. They can help you through every step of the process from deciding which type of event to host to helping you plan each step. Whatever event you choose, be sure to browse DollarDays selection of pink and breast cancer awareness-themed table covers, photo/balloon holders, and pink ribbon bands to make the most of your event.

Donate
Monetary donations are always useful. You can choose the type of donation you’d like to make from one-time donations, to annually, to yearly. Most breast cancer organizations allow you to make a donation in a loved ones’ name or choose where you’d like your money to go (research, home care, support during treatment, etc.).

Some particularly useful donations include breast cancer prosthesis donations, gas cards, gift cards, and donations from local restaurants. Those in the midst of treatments will appreciate any of these thoughtful donations.

Medical News Today has an extensive list of charities and the types of donations they are looking for. This resource can help you narrow your efforts and plan more effectively.

Wear Pink
Another easy and effective way to help raise breast cancer awareness is by wearing pink throughout the month of October. Be intentional and be bold with your choices. As the weather gets cooler, there are tons of opportunities to add a pop of pink to your wardrobe —scarves, hats, and gloves are great ways to show your pink.

The Importance of Donating Child & Baby Essentials

Learning that you’re expecting a child is an emotional time. While there is plenty of elation and wonder, there is also some anxiety and worry. Am I ready? Will I know what to do? Can I afford this?

The cost of raising a child is a valid and very common concern, across socio-economic groups and especially among those surviving paycheck to paycheck. The US Department of Agriculture publishes an annual report on the coast of raising a child in the United States. However, the last time the report was published was 2017. U.S. News and World Reports estimates that “adjusted for inflation, the [cost of raising a child] is $267,233 in 2021 dollars, based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.”

Expenses Can Quickly Add Up
Giving birth and raising a baby is expensive – especially in the United States where healthcare costs can be astronomical. Parents Magazine writes, “the average cost of having a vaginal delivery is between $5,000 and $11,000 in most states.” Those costs increase for a c-section. Then, once the baby is born, there are the costs of diapers, food, doctors’ visits, and other miscellaneous costs just in the first year. These costs quickly add up. There is also additional furniture, equipment, and clothes, to budget for.

While the first year is one of the most expensive, as children age, many of these costs add up. Expenses vary as the child ages but for average middle income family, the Department of Agriculture estimates the three biggest expenses while kids are young are housing, food, and child care. The Plutus Foundation estimates the cost of food alone can be nearly $3,000 per year with child care and education costs coming in at over $37,000.

Even if they’ve outgrown childcare, as children age, the costs of raising them increases for several reasons. Their food costs increase, cost of clothing increases, and as they begin to drive, there is gas and insurance costs (even if they don’t own their own car).

Many Families Need Help
Even with one or two parents working stable jobs, adding a child to the family requires careful budgeting. For those living below the poverty line, it can feel nearly impossible to create a budget where every family member is well cared for. According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, 38% of children in the US live in low-income families while one in five children are considered poor. Low-income families are those with four members, two of whom are children, making less than $51,852 per year.

Poverty impacts children and families in every state, those of every race and ethnicity. While there are several government programs to help struggling families, applying for assistance can be daunting. Help is available, but the qualification requirements and application processes for each program can be confusing.

There have been several relief programs added since the start of the pandemic but for some, these only increase the sense of overwhelm. Finance writer Maryalene LaPonsie writes, “Pre-pandemic, people could walk into churches, community nonprofits and government offices to request help in navigating the application process. However, many of those buildings are now closed to the public.” People in need are now looking to family, friends, and local community non-profits for help.

How You Can Help
Donating essential items to families in need has never been easier. There are several nationwide relief organizations focused on helping families like the United Way, the American Red Cross and Salvation Army. However, there are also many local nonprofits, church groups, and charities always accepting donations to help those in need.

DollarDays partners with hundreds of organizations to help serve their communities. From convenient wish lists to thousands of high-quality items, you’ll find everything you need to make a lasting impact.

High Priced Items Families Cannot be Without
One of the most essential and expensive costs for new families is diapers. On average, babies use up to 12 diapers per day. Therefore, the National Diaper Bank Network estimates the cost of diapers to be about $80 per month. Food stamps do not cover the costs of diapers making this simple necessity difficult to buy for many families. We’ve got a wide variety of diapers, wipes, and diapering accessories in wholesale quantities.

Baby equipment like strollers, baby gates, and safety locks and kits are other huge cost for new parents. With the cost of formula running up to $1,500 per year, helping new parents with feeding accessories can go a long way in easing the financial burdens for families.

Helping the Most Vulnerable Mothers
The homeless with children face even more challenges in providing for their families. The American Institutes for Research places the homeless population at “a staggering 2.5 million children…This historic high represents one in every 30 children in the United States.” These children represent some of the most vulnerable within our communities.

Since 1992, the Homeless Children’s Network has been working tirelessly to help homeless children within the San Francisco area and beyond. They offer several opportunities to get involved including volunteering and donations. As part of the Local Independent Charities of America network, you can easily find other charities closer to home where you can contribute.

Homeless shelters for women and children are always on the lookout for generous donations. DollarDays stocks hundreds of items from winter clothes (for them and their babies) to shoes to food to hygiene products. Homeless children in particular, are at a greater need for school supplies and may be reluctant to reach out and ask for help.

Homeless children deal with a tremendous amount of stress and worry. It’s also important for them to feel like kids too. Donating toys and games is just as important for the overall well-being of our kids. DollarDays has several classic games from which to choose as well as educational STEM toys, puzzles and activity books that will put a smile on any kids’ face.

Season of Giving: How You Can Give Back Today

Throughout history, there have been times when it feels like there is more heartache and hard times than at any other point. Every generation has had its share of disasters —both humanitarian and natural.

Right now, it feels like we are battling so many significant and serious problems in our world. Hurricanes like the most recent Ida, tragic wildfires out west, the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, crisis at our nation’s borders, and homelessness are all current pressing issues. For many of us, there is the feeling that there’s not much we can do. However, we’re not entirely helpless.

Why Give?
Giving to disaster relief no matter the amount or in what capacity, can not only help in relief efforts, but can also make us feel good. Giving back to the community is beneficial for your emotional and physical well being. Lauren Schumacker for Insider writes, “a 2017 report from the Women’s Philanthropy Institute noted that people are happier overall when they give to others and that the more they do or give, the happier they tend to be.” Giving back to your community helps those in need as well as yourself.

It’s not just individuals who benefit from giving. Corporations also benefit greatly from providing disaster relief. According to The Harvard Business Review, “corporate social responsibility programs, driven by internal company values and the need to enhance reputation and image, have been associated with increased employee satisfaction, recruitment, and retention.” During this season of giving, why not start a campaign for your company or organization to give back? With DollarDays as your partner, it’s never been easier to lend a helping hand.

How to Give
Plan a Fundraiser
Planning a fundraiser is not as difficult as it may sound. You can partner with your local schools, church, or other community service organization to coordinate donations. Working with another group can help you reach more people to make the biggest impact possible. Individuals and corporations can organize successful fundraisers with a bit of marketing and passion for a cause.

Donate Directly to Relief Organizations
There are hundreds of emergency relief and preparedness organizations whose mission is to be ready during times of crisis. To do this, they rely on donations and help, not just during a disaster, but also before the tragedy. During these calmer times, they can develop a sensible response plan and review procedures to ensure they will be ready to provide the most help to the most people.

These organizations are always accepting donations and are grateful for any contribution. Buying essential items wholesale is the perfect way to make a big impact. You can stretch donation dollars easily with DollarDays quality products at great prices.

With a Wishlist, you can create a list of the most needed items or browse organizations’ wishlists to see what is most needed.

What to Give
Natural Disaster Relief
As the climate crisis continues to wreak havoc on the earth, the frequency of natural disasters is only getting worse. No one is immune from potential problems no matter where you live. Coastal communities are at risk for floods and hurricanes. Those in landlocked areas have the potential for tornadoes and storms. Wildfires and earthquakes plague those in the west.

It’s more important than ever for people to band together and help one another when possible. While monetary donations are always welcomed, there are many other ways you can help during disaster recovery.

Those effected by natural disasters have had home destroyed or have had to flee. The need for Hurricane Ida relief is currently most pressing but organizations always need many basic supplies like hygiene supplies, emergency blankets, and even ready-to-eat food and snacks. In the case of a natural disaster, there is also significant need in the short term for items like first aid kits, batteries for flash lights and small radios, and emergency tents for shelter.

Afghan Relief Effort
With the recent withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan and the takeover of the Taliban, many Afghans are trying to flee. Refugee centers for Afghans are growing in most places around the world. There is a huge and increasing need for supplies.

As shelters in the US get set up, they’ll need blankets, clothing, and food as well as baby supplies and hygiene products.

You can also work with crisis centers like the International Rescue Committee to help refugees find proper housing. Or try the Lutheran Immigration and Rescue Service which is providing Afghan refugee relief in the form of airport transportation, meals, and housing.

Winter Homeless Outreach
As summer turns to fall, our homeless population grows more vulnerable. In many parts of the country, winter means colder temperatures so winter apparel like coats, hats, and gloves are particularly wanted.

Homeless shelters also frequently need basic personal care and hygiene supplies. These items can help restore a sense of dignity to individuals and families. According to Backpacks USA, “Good hygiene can also improve self-confidence in people who have an unstable income or are experiencing homelessness.l Furthermore, adequate hygiene and sanitizing products help prevent the spread of diseases in shelters.

Because the homeless population often includes families with young children, toys, games, and children’s clothing are also excellent items to include on a donation list. Many children try to hide their family’s financial situation and feel such relief when they receive what they need. When they also receive things they want, like activity books and toys, they can begin to feel like everyone else. These donations are often the ones that make the most impact.

With so many areas in need, giving back to the community has never been more important —no matter where you live. DollarDays makes it easy to help you plan a fundraiser, solicit donations, or find items to give those in need. With wholesale quantities and competitive pricing, you won’t believe the outstanding quality of all of our products.

3 Ways to DIY Your Backpack

One of the best ways to get kids excited about school is to ensure they feel prepared with great school supplies. Unfortunately, most schools across the country have to work within pretty significant budget constraints. This means parents often must foot the bill, or rely on generous donations, to get kids what they need to succeed.

In a recent KPMG survey of over 1,000 adults, “the average parent’s spending per student is expected to be as much as $270, compared with roughly $250 in 2020.” It’s important to try to cut costs where you can. For many parents, this means opting for generic school supplies.

While most kids may not care about some of the specifications like the size of their binder or the number of sheets in their notebooks, they do care about the colors and designs on their supplies. The more affordable products are generally those that are more generic looking like plain notebooks, pencil cases, and backpacks.

Inevitably, there is a good chance that whatever supplies they choose, someone else in their class or school, will likely have the same thing. Writing their names on their supplies is a good way to prevent them from getting misplaced. But there are some school items you can improve with a little creativity and a few supplies – like backpacks.

Stickers and original drawings are great for binder covers and folders. But when it comes to backpacks, you’ll want to go the extra step to make them totally unique. Help your kids turn an ordinary backpack into the envy of their peers with a DIY upgrade.

DIY projects will help your kids take pride in their work, and they are also great for improving things like organization, time management, and creativity. Tara Dennis, a creative connoisseur, and TV host says, “Creative projects help develop your child’s sensory stimulation, imagination and fine and gross motor skills.” A beginning of school DIY project may be just what your kids need to bridge the gap between lazy summer days and structured school days.

DollarDays has everything you need to help your kids with a new school year project to help them feel confident and enthusiastic about heading back into the classroom. We love these Forward backpacks that come in a variety of sizes and colors. Along with some of the supplies below, they are the perfect base to create a one-of-a-kind backpack.

Simple Add-Ons They’ll Love
Adding on to a backpack is one of the easiest ways to personalize them. There are tons of affordable craft materials that can be attached with glue . Hot glue guns are ideal for materials like felt or other fabric but super glue — and even Elmer’s glue — will work for other add-ons like foam cut outs or even stickers.

You can also try adding charms and plush toys. These hot ticket items generally come with string or wrist straps you can easily tie to zippers and secure to backpack straps. Kids love collecting, trading, and showing off these cute toys.

If your child is older, they can experiment with sewing different materials on their backpacks. We love sequins and gemstones, patches and pom poms, and any other cute embellishments you can find. You don’t really need a sewing machine just a bit of patience and a steady hand.

Mark it Up
Another easy way to embellish an ordinary backpack is with markers. Markers are one of the most affordable art supplies around and they come in a variety of vibrant colors. For best results, opt for permanent markers that won’t smudge or wash away after getting wet.

If your child is artistic and likes to draw free hand, give them a box of fresh markers and let them create. If they are a bit more tentative or like some help getting started, you can try stencils or even use strips of tape to give the appearance of lines or shapes.

You could also try fabric paint. Working with a paintbrush might be a bit more frustrating for younger kids, but older kids might prefer the more polished look the paint will give.

Tie-dye
Tie-dye is one of those trends that never seems to go out of style. Maybe it’s the colors, maybe it’s the inherently cool designs it makes, or maybe because it’s relatively easy (even if it doesn’t always look that way).

If you’ve never tie-dyed before, you can get started with a convenient buckets, squirt bottles, and gloves.

There are tons of sites and video tutorials that can help with the tie dying process. We like these instructions and this video.

You don’t have to spend crazy amounts of money on a tricked-out backpack. Chances are, even if you do, someone else will have something similar. Instead, help your kids explore their creative side by decorating their own backpacks. All they need are a few, basic materials, crafting supplies, and a positive attitude. They’ll take pride in making their own bag and feel great about expressing their individuality.

If you need a few ideas to get you started, check out these fun DIY backpacks.

6 Emergency Relief Essentials

The coronavirus caught many people off guard. When thousands of Americans rushed out to buy paper goods and supplies, it was clear that most of us (individuals, schools, and businesses) were not prepared for a pandemic.

And it’s not just viruses that are cause for concern. As wild weather continues to be the norm across much of the country, learning to respond to more disasters requires significant resources and continued coordination among local authorities, emergency response teams, and disaster relief organizations.

In a recent analysis of the Census Bureau’s American Housing Survey, ValuePenguin Insurance found “40% of the population doesn’t have three days’ worth of water set aside.” They also write, “Most people are somewhat prepared for short emergencies, but extended disruptions to reliable institutions or evacuations could spell trouble for many Americans.”

Disasters of this magnitude don’t just impact one or two families, but entire communities. Not only is it important to be prepared personally, it’s also important to provide whatever assistance and help you can to your neighbors. When people pool resources, they can better meet the needs of everyone.

When a disaster strikes, it’s difficult to think clearly. It can seem silly or futile to plan for something that may not even occur but leaving preparation to the last minute or not having a clear plan in place, can mean the difference between life and death.

Ready.gov, the US government’s official organization in charge of disaster relief recommends every family and business create both a detailed plan and has a supply of disaster relief essentials so that they can help themselves and community members who may be more comprised. Here are 6 emergency relief essentials:

First Aid Kit
Whether it’s a bad storm, fire, flood, or earthquake, there is increased potential for people to get hurt or need medical attention. Having a well-stocked first aid kit available at all times is invaluable.

You’ll need some kind of disinfectant, bandages, tape, and gauze. Some other items recommended by the Red Cross include a supply of ibuprofen and aspirin, a cold compress, non-latex gloves, as well as any personal medications and personal physician contact information.

First aid kits are easy to donate and can help to save hundreds when the need arises. DollarDays is committed to helping businesses and organizations prepare for the worst to help as many people as possible when the time comes.

Hygiene Kits
Hygiene kits may not be the first supplies that come to mind as disaster relief essentials, but for extended periods without water or power, these will become increasingly important. Items like toothpaste, toothbrushes, and soap are easy to keep on hand and won’t take up too much space in a larger emergency supply kit.

We love this one with enough of the basics to keep you feeling fresh. Because this kit is available in bulk at great prices, consider a donation to a local shelter or non-profit organization that works with community leaders.

Flashlights
Flashlights are critical in most weather-related emergencies. Because powerful storms like hurricanes, tornadoes, and blizzards disrupt power, flashlights are essential. They’re also important in search and rescue missions.

Don’t be left in the dark. These portable, battery-operated flashlights will help keep everyone calm while you take care of practical matters in an emergency.

Blankets
Blankets are another essential emergency relief item recommended by the Red Cross. Fleece blankets will help keep you warm and they dry out quickly. If they get wet, simply ring them out and they’ll dry in no time. They are a cheap and easy way to keep warm during an emergency — without being overly bulky.

If you have children, a fleece blanket is your best option as they are soft and won’t irritate their skin. They are also lightweight and easy to pack.PrimalSurvivor.net writes, “If you have small children, then the fleece is probably the better option [than wool] for a survival blanket.

Ponchos
Like fleece blankets, ponchos are cheap, easy to pack and store, and are incredibly useful. Ponchos are designed to keep you dry but they can also help keep body heat in. They can quickly be thrown over people, pets, or valuables during violent wet weather.

These bright yellow ponchos will help loved ones remain visible and can be used in a variety of situations. As BePrepared.com points out, there are a number of uses for ponchos in an emergency. They can be used to create a small waterproof shelter, as a bag, and even to collect rainwater to drink. Ponchos are also good as a ground tarp and can be fashioned into a rope or wound wrap if necessary. They are definitely a must-have in any emergency preparedness kit.

They’re great for small businesses to keep on hand as they don’t take up much space and can be passed out quickly to large groups of people.

Backpacks
There are lots of different ways you can pack your emergency essentials but a backpack will always be a good bet. They are large enough to carry all the items above but small enough that they won’t get too heavy.

Keep your backpack stocked and ready to go in a safe and convenient place so when the time comes, you can just grab it and go. Backpacks allow you to go hands-free and with different compartments, you can easily find exactly what you need (like those flashlights!).

DollarDays stocks sturdy Forward backpacks in a variety of colors and sizes. You can pack different backpacks for different emergencies or perhaps make a kit for your home and your car.

If you run a small business or organization, it’s important to have enough supplies for everyone in your community. Backpacks are a great way to divide what you have so all are prepared.

Emergency preparedness kits are an easy way to bring peace of mind to yourself and your loved ones. DollarDays is proud to work with organizations around to country to make sure people have exactly what they need in a time of crisis.

Stem and Fidget Toys for Classroom Development

Teachers are trained to help keep kids’ learning activities varied and engage students in high interest topics. However, students will inevitably feel restless at some points during the school day. Especially in the first few days and weeks back after a long summer break, students may need time to adjust to hours sitting at a desk.

DollarDays is proud to provide teachers all the tools they need to keep students focused on and engaged in learning. We’re not talking about just supplies (which sure can help), but also helpful toys for class and STEM activities to keep lesson fun.

Fidget toys can be incredibly beneficial to students. The Flushing Hospital Medical Center’s Health Beat newsletter reported on a study about the effectiveness of fidget toys in schools. “The result was a 10% increase in certain academic scores among students who used fidget toys. Even more impressive was that students diagnosed with ADHD saw an increase of 27% in the academic scores.” These aren’t just toys, but rather learning tools for some students.

STEM toys are just as beneficial. Kids love these kinds of toys so much, they often don’t even realize how much they’re learning. There are plenty of studies that show STEM toys can help kids learn the fundamentals of science, engineering, technology and math concepts. However, what’s more important than labeling or packaging are “toys that encourage open-ended, active play and problem-solving.”

We’ve got several proven winners when it comes to fidgets and STEM activities kids love.

Pop It Fidget Toy
This colorful fidget toy will soothe anxious fingers and minds. The sensory details, like a smooth surface and satisfying pop sound will be enough to relieve stress for some kids without disturbing the entire classroom. See why it’s one of our bestsellers!

This 25-piece brick set encourages kids to build creatively. They’ll love the endless possibilities. With several shapes, sizes, colors, kids of all ages will be engaged. 3 Ways to Upgrade your Classroom Teaching 2021

We love helping students feel prepared and ready for school with high-quality school supplies. But maybe even more important is helping teachers. Teachers are the backbone of schools serving as mentors, disciplinarians, and encouraging cheerleaders for their students. Teachers have an incredibly difficult job ensuring that students feel safe and comfortable, making learning engaging and accessible, and maintaining good relationships with families and staff.

DollarDays is proud to help teachers with essential school supplies to upgrade their classrooms and teaching. We love being an affordable option with hundreds of choices for teachers across the country. When teachers are prepared, they can better help their students so that everyone is successful.

We’ve got three tips for teachers to upgrade their classrooms and set them up for their best year yet.

1. Make a plan and set some goals.

Make a plan for how you will start the year and set some goals to hold yourself (and your students) accountable. According to the National Education Association, setting classroom goals is just as important as your own individual goals. “Working together toward a goal — such as a holiday project to help a needy family, a class trip, or a class party at the end of the year — can help develop class spirit.” Goal setting is a great way to start the year on a positive note.

Remember, this should be unique to your new class. Even veteran teachers sometimes need a reminder that every class and every year is different. What worked last year (or for the last few years) may not necessarily work this year. Give yourself time to adjust to the new group of students in your class. This could take a couple of days or weeks as students get used to one another and the new teacher in charge.

2. Be prepared for your classes.

Classrooms packed with 20 to 30 students to demand organization. Knowing you are prepared for all those bodies with essential back-to-school supplies will have you feeling cool, calm, and confident when that first bell rings.

Having systems in place for collecting homework and making sure lessons plans run smoothly is easy with DollarDays. Ensure no papers get lost between school and home with these pocket folders in a rainbow of colors. Be sure to stock up on Expo markers and personal dry erase boards so everyone can get in on the learning action.

You’ll find everything from teaching tools like flashcards and workbooks to classroom decorations to rewards and incentives to classroom decorations — all at affordable wholesale prices in DollarDays’ Back-to-School shop.

3. Understand the value of rest.

One of the best teaching tips from veteran teachers is to be sure to get enough rest. Keeping up with a classroom of energetic kiddos is tough! Unwind from a long day on your feet with a relaxing bath bomb bubble bath. Or, Netflix and chill with an adult coloring book. Studies show they are excellent at reducing stress and anxiety, and they can improve sleep and focus. Stock up with our one-of-a-kind collection.

We also love these fun stress balls you can keep at your desk (and share with students who may grow tense in class). You and your students will also love our new poppers. They help relieve stress and make for great rewards for hard work.

Get back-to-school ready with all our bulk supplies aimed specifically at teachers. With a few key items, you’ll be all set to upgrade your classroom and start the year off right.

Top 5 PPE Picks for Students and Classrooms

With the Delta Covid variant circulating throughout the U.S. and schools preparing for the return of students, the need for PPE for students is still strong. With teachers busy getting classrooms ready and lesson plans set, it’s the perfect time to organize a much needed (and much welcomed) donation to your local schools in need.

While school supplies like notebooks, folders, and backpacks are always welcomed, this year consider donating PPE that will be required in schools across the country. Many teachers end up supplying their own classrooms with these items as school budgets continue to be tightened. DollarDays has all the essentials to keep students, teachers, and staff safe all year long. Here are our top five PPE picks for students and classrooms.

1. Fabric Fashion Masks

Kids might be somewhat reluctant to put masks on all day after a summer break. But these fabric masks are so cute and fashionable, they’ll love showing them off to their friends. The animal designs and colors will appeal to all kids and make mask wearing a breeze. These spandex and polyester masks are comfortable and will help keep germs at bay.

2. Hand Sanitizer with Silicone Holder

These personal-sized hand sanitizers come in a variety of designs from pineapples to adorable animals. They are perfect for little ones who may tend to misplace things. They easily attach to backpacks or lunch bags so you know your student will never be without a means to clean hands from germs. Because they’re available in bulk, you be able to keep all the kiddos in the classroom germ-free all year long.

3. Hand Sanitizer Wipes

These hand sanitizer packs are from one of our favorite brands, Yoobi. Not only does Yoobi make quality, trendy products kids love, they also are committed to doing good. For every Yoobi item you purchase, a Yoobi item will be donated to a child in need in the U.S. With 24 hand sanitizer sachets per pack, you can easily supply an entire classroom. At wholesale prices, you can supply an entire school with this PPE essential.

4. Decorated Disposable Mask

Disposable masks have a reputation for being boring or generic. Not these! Kids will definitely forget their cloth masks on occasion or will need a replacement. Having these decorated disposable masks on hand will ensure that all kids are safe and ready to learn. They’ll love choosing from the six fun designs. Because they’re sized for kids, they’ll stay in place so teachers can focus on their lessons.

5. Kids Face Shield

Of course, not all kids love wearing masks. These face shields are the perfect alternative. They are also great for any immuno-compromised student needing extra protection.

Along with a face mask, a face shield will provide an additional barrier against airborne germs. They fit snuggly at the forehead while keeping noses and mouths protected. The happy animal designs and bright colors will make them fun to wear.

We love providing schools with everything they’ll need to make sure each child receives the best education possible. By offering wholesale items at unbeatable prices, we are committed to being a positive force in your community. With your help, we can make this year a success by arming students and teachers with these essential PPE products.
